About tides at Al Bateen Beach

A short guide to the coastline at Al Bateen Beach — geography, sea state, and what the tide is actually doing under your feet.

Al Bateen Beach is on the western side of Abu Dhabi Island, facing southwest into the Khor Al Bateen (Al Bateen Creek) — a tidal channel that separates Abu Dhabi Island from the smaller adjacent islands and the mainland beyond. The beach is a short drive from the central Corniche area and sits at the edge of the Al Bateen residential district, one of the older established neighbourhoods on the island. The Al Bateen Marina and yacht club are immediately south of the beach; the marina handles Abu Dhabi's private yachting community.

The tidal regime is mixed semidiurnal, spring range approximately 1.5–2.0 m above Chart Datum — consistent with Abu Dhabi Port. The Al Bateen position faces SW into the tidal channel rather than directly into the open Gulf; the channel narrows to the south toward the mainland, concentrating the tidal current to 0.5–1.2 knots at springs through the Al Bateen passage. This current is more noticeable than on the Corniche beach face; swimmers at Al Bateen beach should be aware of the lateral drift particularly at mid-tide on spring days.

At low water the beach reveals the flat sand bottom of the channel approach; the water retreats 30–50 m from the high-water beach edge. The inner sections of the beach are very shallow at low water — knee-deep or less for a considerable distance. At high water the beach is at its most swimmable, with the depth over the inner sand giving comfortable entry. The Al Bateen Marina to the south has a seawall and pontoon system; tide-dependent depth in the marina entrance channel matters to keelboat owners and is managed using the NCM Abu Dhabi tide table.

The Al Bateen area is the location of the traditional dhow building yard (Boatyard 41, on the Al Bateen Creek side) — one of the last working traditional wooden dhow construction facilities in the UAE. The yard is not a public tourist site but the dhows under construction are visible from the creek side access road. The Al Bateen fish market (Al Mina market, accessible from the Corniche by car) is immediately to the east.

Fishing from the Al Bateen shoreline rocks and the marina outer wall targets trevally (Caranx species), barracuda, and grouper on the incoming tide from October through April. The channel tidal current at Al Bateen concentrates bait in the current seams; fishing from the channel edge with the current running (mid-flood or mid-ebb) can be productive. NCM UAE publishes official tide tables. Predictions here: Open-Meteo Marine, ±45 min / ±0.2–0.3 m.

The Al Bateen Marina is one of the main recreational sailing bases in Abu Dhabi; the marina accommodates sailing dinghies, keelboats, and charter yachts. The Abu Dhabi Sailing and Yacht Club (ADYC), based at Al Bateen, organises weekend racing in the inner channels; race starts are timed to the tide phase in the Al Bateen channel, with the flood preferred for offshore legs and the ebb for return runs. The regatta season runs October through April; summer racing is suspended due to the extreme heat.

The Al Bateen district was one of the first planned residential areas in Abu Dhabi, developed in the late 1960s and 1970s when the oil economy began to transform the emirate. The neighbourhood retains some of the original villa-scale residential character that predates the high-rise density of later Abu Dhabi development; the proximity to the beach and the yacht club has made it one of the higher-value residential addresses in the city. The combination of the marina, the dhow yard, and the fish market in the same neighbourhood gives Al Bateen a maritime identity that is distinct from the more generic Corniche beach zone.

Common questions

Tide questions about Al Bateen Beach

Quick answers to the most common questions about tide times, range, and water access at Al Bateen Beach.

Is Al Bateen Beach suitable for casual swimming?

Al Bateen Beach is a local residential beach — calmer and less crowded than the Corniche but without the full facilities of the paid beach zones. The water is shallower and the tidal current more noticeable here than at the Corniche (the Al Bateen channel runs 0.5–1.2 knots at springs). Swimming is most comfortable at high water when depth is sufficient and the current is at slack. At mid-tide on springs the lateral current is noticeable; stay within your depth and exit the water if the drift becomes uncomfortable. There are no permanent lifeguards at Al Bateen Beach. The most comfortable swimming window at Al Bateen is in the morning (before 10:00) at high tide during the October–April season.

Where do the tide predictions on this page come from?

Open-Meteo Marine, a free gridded global ocean model. Accuracy is typically ±45 minutes on timing and ±0.2–0.3 m on height. The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) UAE publishes official tide tables for Abu Dhabi Port; the Al Bateen area is sufficiently close to Abu Dhabi Port that the port prediction applies with minimal adjustment. For navigation in the Al Bateen channel and marina, use NCM data. This page is not for navigation. NCM UAE publishes tide height predictions for Abu Dhabi Port, which is the reference station for Al Bateen channel predictions.

What tidal current can I expect in the Al Bateen channel?

The Al Bateen channel between Abu Dhabi Island and the adjacent islands and mainland runs 0.5–1.2 knots at springs. The current reverses direction with each tide turn; the peak current occurs at mid-flood and mid-ebb, roughly 3 hours after the predicted high or low. At slack water (within 20–30 minutes of the predicted high or low) the current is minimal. The channel current is not a hazard for competent swimmers staying near the beach face, but it is noticeable and should be factored into any kayaking or paddleboarding on the channel side of the beach. The slack water window at Al Bateen channel is brief — approximately 20–30 minutes around the predicted high or low; plan yacht departures within this window.

Can I visit the traditional dhow building yard near Al Bateen?

The traditional dhow building yard (often called Boatyard 41 or the Al Bateen Dhow Yard) is on the Al Bateen Creek side, accessible from the main road along the creek. It is a working commercial yard, not a formal tourist attraction; there is no visitor centre or entry fee structure. Respectful observation from the road or the creek-side walkway is generally tolerated. Contact the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism for any guided heritage tours that include the yard. The best light for observation is in the morning. The traditional dhow yard at Al Bateen Creek is one of only a few remaining in the UAE; wooden dhow construction uses a combination of teak (from India and Myanmar) and local neem wood.

What fish species can be caught from Al Bateen Beach?

Shore fishing from the Al Bateen shoreline rocks and marina outer wall in the October–April cooler season targets trevally (Caranx species), barracuda (Sphyraena species), and occasional grouper (Epinephelus species). The tidal current in the Al Bateen channel concentrates bait in the seams between the current and the slack water near the channel edges; fishing with the current running at mid-flood or mid-ebb can be productive. Summer (May–September) shore fishing is less productive as the extreme water temperatures (30–35°C) reduce feeding activity in many species. Kingfish (Scomberomorus commerson) are migratory in the Gulf; their inshore presence at Al Bateen is most reliable November–January when they follow bait schools along the island channels.
