Bizerte Governorate

Bizerte Governorate occupies the northernmost corner of Tunisia — and of continental Africa — where the Tell Atlas hills meet the Mediterranean at a coastline of limestone headlands, lagoon passages, and long sandy beaches. The governorate's defining geographic feature is the Bizerte Channel, a 0.6 km wide passage connecting the Mediterranean to Lac de Bizerte, which in turn feeds the freshwater Lake Ichkeul behind it. That chain — open sea, brackish lagoon, freshwater lake — creates an estuarine corridor that has been fished, farmed, and navigated for more than two millennia. The tidal regime across the governorate is microtidal Mediterranean: spring range roughly 0.3 to 0.5 m, sometimes less in sheltered lagoon sections. Astronomical tide is a minor player here. Sea level along this coast responds more to meteorological forcing than to the moon — autumn and winter storms driven by the Tramontane (from the northwest) and the Gregale (from the northeast) push water through the Bizerte Channel and can hold the lagoon 30 to 50 cm above its mean level for days at a time. The Ichkeul wetlands behind the lagoon are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important wintering grounds for migratory waterbirds in the western Mediterranean; flamingo, duck, and coot populations peak from October through February. The Kroumirie mountains to the west — the wettest region in Tunisia, receiving up to 1,500 mm of rain per year — drain into this coast via short, steep rivers that pulse with the rainy season. INM (Institut National de la Météorologie, Tunisia) is the national forecast authority for this coast. Tide predictions on TideTurtle pages for Bizerte Governorate come from Open-Meteo Marine, a gridded global ocean model; accuracy is typically ±45 min on timing and ±0.2–0.3 m on height. For a coast where the predicted range is itself only 0.3 to 0.5 m, that uncertainty is substantial — treat timing as approximate and weigh INM meteorological forecasts heavily when planning coastal activity.
