About tides at Tongyeong

A short guide to the coastline at Tongyeong — geography, sea state, and what the tide is actually doing under your feet.

Tongyeong is on the southern tip of the Korean mainland, a city of islands with 570 surrounding islets in the Hallyeohaesang National Marine Park. The city has an outsized cultural significance: composer Yun Isang (internationally regarded as one of the great 20th-century composers) was born here, and the town maintains a strong arts identity. The Admiral Yi Sun-sin, who defeated the Japanese fleet with his turtle ships (Geobukseon) in the 1590s Imjin War, fought his campaigns from this harbour. Tidal range is semidiurnal with a mean spring range of about 2.0 metres.

The Tongyeong Cable Car (the longest in South Korea) ascends Mireuksan (461 m) from the south side of the peninsula, giving views across the island-studded sea to the south. On clear days, 30 to 40 islands are visible simultaneously — the Hallyeohaesang landscape that defines the southern Korean coast. The cable car gives non-hikers access to a viewpoint that would otherwise require a demanding trail.

Ferry services from Tongyeong connect to Yeonhwa Island and Bijindo — a small island whose walking path (3.5 km) along the top of a narrow ridge is considered one of the most scenic short hikes in Korea. The ridge walk is accessible April through October; the ferry schedule is tide-dependent and the crossing takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Bijindo has limited accommodation and is a quiet alternative to the busier islands.

The Tongyeong fish market and the haenyeo (female free-divers) culture of the surrounding islands are the most distinctive water-related local traditions. Haenyeo dive without SCUBA equipment for abalone, conch, sea cucumber, and sea urchin — a tradition maintained in Korea (and Jeju) for over 1500 years. The free-diving technique, using breath-hold and weighted belts, allows dives to 10 to 20 metres. Some haenyeo communities around Tongyeong still work commercially.

The Hallyeohaesang sea kayaking route between Tongyeong and Geoje (and through the island chain) is one of the best multi-day sea kayaking routes in Northeast Asia. The calm, sheltered passages between the islands and the mainland, with wild camping on uninhabited islands, attract international kayakers.

Predictions on this page come from Open-Meteo Marine, a gridded global ocean model. Accuracy is typically within plus or minus 45 minutes on timing and 0.2 to 0.3 metres on height — model-derived, not from a local gauge. For Korean tide data, consult the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency at khoa.go.kr.

Common questions

Tide questions about Tongyeong

Quick answers to the most common questions about tide times, range, and water access at Tongyeong.

What are haenyeo?

Haenyeo are female free-divers who traditionally harvest shellfish and sea vegetables from coastal waters in Korea and Jeju without SCUBA equipment, using only breath-holding technique and a weighted belt. The tradition has existed for over 1500 years; it's a matriarchal diving culture (only women traditionally dive in this tradition). Haenyeo around Tongyeong and the Hallyeohaesang islands dive for abalone, conch, sea urchin, and sea cucumber, typically to 5 to 20 metres depth. UNESCO inscribed the haenyeo culture on the Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2016.

What is the tidal range at Tongyeong?

Mean spring range at Tongyeong is approximately 2.0 metres. The island-channel geometry creates concentrated tidal current in the narrower passages between islands. The Tongyeong ferry terminal's departure schedule is coordinated with tidal conditions for the smaller island routes. Kayakers planning multi-day routes through the Hallyeohaesang island chain should carry tidal current charts — the narrow passages can run 2+ knots on spring tides.

How do I get to Bijindo island?

Ferries to Bijindo depart from Tongyeong's Tongyeong Ferry Terminal (near the main city waterfront) several times daily. Journey time is 15 to 20 minutes. The island has a walking path (3.5 km) along a narrow ridge with views of the surrounding sea and islands — rated one of Korea's best short hikes. The island has a small guesthouse and a camping area; day visitors are common but overnight guests are few, giving the island a quieter feel after the last ferry leaves. Check the Korea Ferry Guide (koreabyferryguide.com) for current schedules.

What is the Tongyeong Cable Car?

The Tongyeong Cable Car (Hallyeo Cable Car) runs 1975 metres from the lower station (sea level, southern city edge) to the top of Mireuksan (461 m) — one of the longest aerial cable cars in South Korea. Travel time is 9 minutes. At the top, the observation deck gives panoramic views of the Hallyeohaesang island archipelago. Open daily; booking ahead on weekends is advisable. The upper station has a walking trail to the actual summit of Mireuksan (30 minutes).

Is sea kayaking possible around Tongyeong?

Yes — Tongyeong is one of the best bases for sea kayaking in South Korea. The sheltered island channels of Hallyeohaesang National Marine Park provide calm, protected water suitable for intermediate paddlers; several uninhabited islands allow wild camping with advance permit from the national park office. Guides and rental equipment are available from kayak operators in Tongyeong. Multi-day routes toward Geoje (25 km) or south through the outer islands are well-documented among Korean sea kayakers.
