Solunar tradition: major periods are the ≈3h windows around moon transit and opposition; minor are ≈2h around moonrise and moonset. Pair with the local tide stage and wind for the best read.
Last spring tide on Sat 04 Jul (range 2.0m). Next spring tide on Fri 10 Jul (range 1.6m). Next neap on Tue 07 Jul.
Spring tides cluster around new and full moons (biggest swings). Neap tides land on quarter moons (smallest swings). See the spring tide and neap tide glossary entries for the why.
A short guide to the coastline at Pulau Ubin — geography, sea state, and what the tide is actually doing under your feet.
Pulau Ubin sits in the Johor Strait between Singapore and the Malaysian state of Johor, approximately 1.5 kilometres from Changi Point on the Singapore mainland. It is the second-largest of Singapore's offshore islands at roughly 10 square kilometres, and it is the one that has most successfully resisted the city-state's transformation. There are no private cars on Ubin. The roads — unpaved laterite tracks through secondary forest and past disused granite quarry ponds — carry bicycles, the occasional electric village cart, and on weekends, a steady flow of visitors walking, cycling, and birdwatching. Wild boar move through the forest at dawn and dusk, unconcerned by the slow human traffic. Monitor lizards sun themselves on the quarry pond banks.
The bumboat crossing from Changi Point Ferry Terminal takes 10 minutes and runs on demand — when enough passengers gather at the terminal (nominally 12), the boat goes. There is no fixed timetable. In practice, waiting time on weekdays is 15 to 30 minutes; on weekends the boats run almost continuously. The bumboat landing on Ubin's southern shore deposits visitors in the small kampung (village), where bicycle rental operations line the main track. The kampung retains the character of a 1960s Singapore village — coffee shops serving nasi lemak and teh tarik, a Chinese temple, a small hardware store.
The Johor Strait between Pulau Ubin and the Malaysian mainland narrows to approximately 500 metres in places and has a spring tidal range of approximately 2.7 metres, driven by the same Strait of Singapore tidal system that affects the southern islands. The tidal stream through the strait runs at 1 to 2 knots at peak spring flow, east on the flood tide and west on the ebb. This current is significant for small boat operators, paddlers, and swimmers — the strait is not a safe swimming environment at peak tidal flow, but it is crossable by experienced sea kayaker at slack water.
Chek Jawa Wetlands occupies the eastern tip of Pulau Ubin and is managed as a nature reserve by the National Parks Board. The wetlands are accessible via a 1.3-kilometre boardwalk from the main kampung track — a 20-minute bicycle ride or 40-minute walk. The boardwalk crosses mangrove and seagrass lagoon environments, and the Jejawi Tower at the boardwalk's midpoint gives a view over the entire wetland system. The inter-tidal sandflat is visible from the boardwalk at low water; the lagoon area is only opened to visitors during scheduled low-water access windows (check NParks for current dates).
Birdwatching on Pulau Ubin is productive year-round and exceptional during the northeast monsoon migration (October to January), when raptors funnel through the Johor Strait corridor. Crested goshawk, grey-headed fish eagle, and white-bellied sea eagle are resident. During migration, Oriental honey buzzard, Japanese sparrowhawk, and Chinese goshawk move through in numbers. The coastal forests near Chek Jawa hold the last population of the changeable hawk-eagle on Singapore territory.
For families with children, Ubin offers a low-key coastal day: bicycle rental at the kampung, a slow circuit of the main tracks through forest and past quarry ponds, lunch at the kampung coffee shop, and the boardwalk at Chek Jawa. The quarry ponds are connected to the sea and tidal, though their exchange with the strait is restricted by the quarry geometry — water level in the ponds fluctuates 0.5 to 1 metre with the tide, noticeably less than the full strait range.
Predictions on this page come from Open-Meteo Marine, a gridded global ocean model. Accuracy is typically within plus or minus 45 minutes on timing and 0.2 to 0.3 metres on height — model-derived, not from a local gauge. The local tide authority is the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), which publishes annual tide tables for Singapore Strait reference stations including the Johor Strait.
Quick answers to the most common questions about tide times, range, and water access at Pulau Ubin.
Take a bumboat from Changi Point Ferry Terminal, which is accessible from Tanah Merah MRT (East-West Line) by bus 2 or 29, or by taxi. The bumboat runs on demand — it departs when sufficient passengers (nominally 12) have gathered at the jetty. On weekdays the wait is typically 15 to 30 minutes; on weekends boats run almost continuously. The crossing takes 10 minutes. The fare is a few Singapore dollars per person, paid on the boat. Return journeys run until around 18:00; check with the boatman for last departure time. Bicycles can be brought across for an additional fee, but rental on the island is straightforward and inexpensive.
The spring tidal range in the Johor Strait is approximately 2.7 metres, driven by the same tidal system as the southern Singapore Strait. The tidal stream runs at 1 to 2 knots at peak spring flow — east on the flood tide, west on the ebb. This current is significant for paddlers and small boat operators crossing the strait to Malaysia; always plan crossings to run with the current or at slack water. The strait is not a safe swimming environment at peak tidal flow. Predictions here come from Open-Meteo Marine (±45 minutes on timing, ±0.3 m on height). Not for navigation; consult MPA Singapore tide tables.
The kampung (village) at the southern ferry landing has bicycle rental shops, several coffee shops serving basic Malay and Chinese food, toilet facilities, and a small hardware store. There are no ATMs on the island — bring cash. Outside the kampung, there are no shops or food vendors; carry food and water for longer rides. The National Parks Board visitor centre at the kampung entrance has maps and information on Chek Jawa. Accommodation on the island is limited to a small number of chalets at the Ubin holiday camp, bookable through the SLA or NParks website.
Pulau Ubin is productive for birds year-round, but the northeast monsoon migration period (October to January) is the most dynamic. Raptors — Oriental honey buzzard, Japanese sparrowhawk, grey-faced buzzard, and Chinese goshawk — funnel through the Johor Strait corridor in numbers during this window. Resident species include crested goshawk, grey-headed fish eagle, white-bellied sea eagle, and changeable hawk-eagle. Early morning (06:00 to 10:00) is the most productive time; raptor migration is most visible on clear days with light northerly winds. The coastal forest near Chek Jawa and the forest around the quarry ponds are the highest-quality birding areas.
Sea kayaking around Pulau Ubin is feasible for experienced paddlers who plan carefully around the tidal current. The Johor Strait runs at 1 to 2 knots at spring tides — a loaded kayak makes 3 to 4 knots, so a 2-knot headcurrent is a significant penalty on a long circumnavigation. Plan the eastern strait section (between Ubin and Malaysia) to run with the current at the chosen tidal phase, then the southern return leg can be timed to the reversed current. The circumnavigation is approximately 14 kilometres and takes 3 to 4 hours at a relaxed pace. A kayak launch permit from MPA Singapore is required for paddling in port limits.
