Réunion North Coast
The northern coast of Réunion, centred on the island's capital Saint-Denis, is the most urbanised shoreline on the island. Saint-Denis sits on a narrow coastal shelf between the sea and a steep escarpment — the city is constrained in a way unique among Indian Ocean island capitals. Spring tidal range runs 0.5 to 0.9 m. The north coast is exposed to Indian Ocean swells wrapping around the island from both east and west, making conditions variable and sometimes powerful on the shallow fringing reef. Sainte-Marie and Sainte-Suzanne to the east of Saint-Denis offer calmer conditions in their respective bays; the northeast coast captures vanilla-growing country where the scent of drying vanilla pods is noticeable in the air above the lagoon. The north coast lacks the lagoon protection found on Réunion's western coast, so most water activities are organised around weather windows and swell forecasts rather than the modest tide. Open-Meteo Marine gridded model, accuracy class ±45 min / ±0.2–0.3 m.
