Réunion North Coast

Réunion North Coast is the sheltered, leeward side of the island, where Saint-Denis — the island's capital and largest city — spreads along a narrow coastal plain backed by the dramatic Cirque de Mafate escarpment. The north coast is more protected from the south-east trades than the exposed southern and eastern shores, with the central volcanic massif blocking the dominant swell direction and leaving relatively calmer water near Saint-Denis. The tidal range is 0.5 to 1.0 metres in a semi-diurnal pattern, small but measurable against the shallow reef flats of the fringing lagoon. Saint-Denis harbour handles inter-island ferries and supply ships, timed to the tidal window through the reef passage. North of the capital, the coast toward Saint-Paul opens slightly to a broader fetch, with a small but consistent surf break popular with local surfers. The lagoon system on this coast is home to dugong, green turtle, and a diversity of reef fish sheltering in the coral gardens. Traditional Réunionais fishing from the north coast targets jobfish, wahoo, and the deep-water snapper species that congregate along the steep submarine slopes immediately offshore.
