Rakhine State

Rakhine State (historically Arakan) occupies the western coastal strip of Myanmar, where the Arakan Mountains drop toward the Bay of Bengal. The state stretches from the Bangladesh border in the north to the Irrawaddy Delta region in the south, and its coastline alternates between river delta mudflats, sandy beach bays, and forested rocky headlands. The tidal regime on the Rakhine coast is the opposite of Cambodia's gulf microtidal character: this is a macrotidal coast. Spring tidal range at Thandwe (the main Ngapali coast gauge reference) runs approximately 4.5 to 5.5 m — among the larger ranges in Southeast Asia. The regime is semidiurnal with diurnal inequality, meaning two recognisable highs and two recognisable lows each day, but with unequal heights. The large range is a consequence of the Bay of Bengal's geometry and resonance: the bay is shaped as a widening funnel open to the south, and the natural resonant period of the basin amplifies the semidiurnal tidal signal, particularly on the northern and eastern shores. The macrotidal character transforms the practical experience of the coast. A 5 m range means beach widths at Ngapali vary by 60 to 80 m between spring high and spring low water. Fishing boat access, tidal flat crossings, and snorkelling windows are all significantly tide-dependent in a way that simply does not apply on the Gulf of Thailand or the Andaman coast further south. The Myanmar Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (MMHI) is the national authority for tidal and meteorological data. The southwest monsoon (May through October) dominates the Rakhine climate: the coast receives some of Myanmar's heaviest rainfall during these months, seas are rough, and most resort operations at Ngapali operate on reduced schedules or close entirely. The dry season from November through April is the prime coastal access window.
