About tides at Kos

A short guide to the coastline at Kos — geography, sea state, and what the tide is actually doing under your feet.

Kos is a long, thin island in the southern Aegean, 4 km from the Turkish coast, one of the most diverse Dodecanese islands for water sports. The island has a flat interior suitable for cycling (unique among the larger Greek islands) and a coastline divided between the calm, sandy beaches on the eastern and northern sides facing Turkey, and the windier exposed beaches on the southwestern coast facing the open Mediterranean. Tidal range is 0.1 to 0.3 metres — negligible.

Tigaki beach on the north coast and the Brothers beach area west of Kos town are the main windsurfing and kitesurfing zones. The steady Meltemi from the north in summer accelerates between the Turkish coast and Kos, producing 15 to 25 knot conditions that are more consistent than many Aegean locations (the Turkish landmass provides some thermal heating effect that sustains the wind). Several windsurf schools operate at Tigaki.

Karadamena on the south coast has a different character — exposed to the Aegean swell that wraps around the western tip of Kos, with small beach break surf in southerly swell conditions (typically after autumn depressions). The water is clearer on the south side than the murkier Turkish-coast-influenced water on the north.

Hippocrates was born on Kos around 460 BC — the island's main tourism claim to medical history. The Asklepion, a 4th-century BC healing sanctuary and medical school (3 km from Kos Town), is the principal archaeological site. The plane tree in the central plateia of Kos Town is traditionally claimed to be the one under which Hippocrates taught — the current tree is about 500 years old, not 2500, but the symbolism is intact.

Diving off Kos is centred on the Agios Fokas headland east of the town, where the reef drops sharply to 20 to 30 metres with good fish populations. The wreck of a Byzantine ship sunk in the 6th century AD was excavated off Kos in the 1980s; the original site is protected but the Kos Archaeological Museum has significant artefacts from the wreck.

Predictions on this page come from Open-Meteo Marine, a gridded global ocean model. Accuracy is typically within plus or minus 45 minutes on timing and 0.2 to 0.3 metres on height — model-derived, not from a local gauge. Common questions

Tide questions about Kos

Quick answers to the most common questions about tide times, range, and water access at Kos.

Is Kos good for windsurfing?

Yes — Tigaki beach and the Brothers area west of Kos Town are established windsurfing zones with summer Meltemi providing 15 to 25 knots reliably from July through September. The channel between Kos and Turkey concentrates and sustains the north wind; Kos is rated as one of the more consistent intermediate windsurf venues in the Aegean. Windsurf schools at Tigaki offer lessons and board rental. The south coast (Karadamena area) gets occasional southerly swell surf conditions in autumn.

What is the Asklepion at Kos?

The Asklepion is a 4th-century BC healing sanctuary dedicated to Asklepios (god of medicine) and associated with the school of Hippocrates. It was one of the most important medical training centres in the ancient world — patients came for treatment combining religious ritual, bathing, diet, and the first systematic clinical observation. The site has three terraced levels of temples and treatment areas; the upper terrace has a Doric temple of Asklepios with views to Turkey. Open daily; entry fee applies. Located 3 km southwest of Kos Town.

Can I cycle around Kos?

Kos is one of the few Greek islands with a flat interior suitable for cycling. The main road network is complemented by a dedicated cycling path running along the north coast from Kos Town to Tigaki (8 km) and continuing west. Bicycles are available for rent throughout Kos Town at modest prices. The south coast road to Kefalos is hillier and more demanding. For a flat coastal cycling day, the north coast path to Tigaki Beach for a swim and return is the standard recommendation.

What is the tidal range at Kos?

The Aegean at Kos has negligible tidal range — 0.1 to 0.3 metres. Water level is wind-driven. The north coast, facing the Turkish coast, is influenced by the wind-channelled Meltemi in summer, which can affect sea conditions significantly even without tidal change. The south coast faces open Aegean and experiences swell from Mediterranean weather systems.

Is there good snorkelling at Kos?

The clearest water near Kos is on the south coast (Karadamena, Agios Stefanos) where the open Aegean swell keeps sediment reduced. The Agios Fokas headland east of Kos Town has rocky reef snorkelling in 3 to 8 metres with sea bream, wrasse, and sea urchins. Water visibility is typically 10 to 15 metres on the south coast and 8 to 12 metres on the north (slightly turbid from the Turkish coast current influence). Water temperature 22 to 26°C from June through October.
