Marquesas Islands

The Marquesas Islands rise abruptly from the Pacific approximately 1,500 kilometres northeast of Tahiti — high volcanic peaks, densely forested ridges, and sea cliffs that descend directly to deep water. There is no barrier reef and no lagoon: the Marquesas sit outside the coral triangle's thermal range, and the cold upwelling that characterises their southern aspect prevents reef formation. The absence of a lagoon means wave energy arrives at the island shorelines unattenuated, and anchorages are often exposed to long-period Pacific swell. The tidal regime in the Marquesas is anomalous within French Polynesia. The archipelago sits near a node in the Pacific tidal wave system, where the diurnal component (K1, O1) dominates over the semidiurnal component (M2). The result is a predominantly diurnal tide: on most days, one high water and one low water dominate the daily cycle, with a range of approximately 0.8 to 1.0 metres at springs. The tidal pattern at Taiohae (Nuku Hiva) differs measurably from Papeete (Tahiti) — a vessel operating on Tahiti tide tables in the Marquesas will find predictions off by not just minutes but potentially by a full tidal phase. Nuku Hiva is the largest island and the administrative capital of the Marquesas. Taiohae Bay, the main anchorage, is a drowned caldera open to the south — sheltered from the northeast trade winds but exposed to south swell in winter (June to August). The town has fuel, provisions, and a gendarmerie. Hiva Oa, in the southern Marquesas, is the cultural capital: Paul Gauguin spent the last years of his life here, and the Espace Culturel Paul Gauguin in Atuona has a reconstruction of his studio (Maison du Jouir). Jacques Brel also lived and died on Hiva Oa, and both men are buried at Calvary Cemetery above the town. The northern coast of Hiva Oa has dramatic sea cliffs up to 800 metres high, accessible only by sea. Ua Pou is the most visually striking of the Marquesas: twelve basalt pinnacles — the eroded cores of ancient volcanic vents — rise from the caldera and are visible from 30 kilometres offshore. Hakahau Bay is the main village and anchorage.
