Pärnu County

Pärnu County occupies the southwestern corner of mainland Estonia, fronting the Gulf of Riga — a roughly triangular enclosed arm of the Baltic shared with Latvia, bounded by the Estonian islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa to the west and the Latvian coast to the south and east. The Gulf of Riga is shallower and more enclosed than the Gulf of Finland; its connection to the broader Baltic runs through the Irbe Strait between Saaremaa and the Latvian coast, a narrow passage that filters the already-small tidal signal further. Tidal range at Pärnu is 5 to 15 centimetres — the smallest of the already-small Baltic figures. Wind dominates completely. The Gulf of Riga has a north-south axis of roughly 150 kilometres, and southwesterly winds push water northward toward Pärnu and the eastern Gulf shore; a persistent northerly reverses the setup and can expose the sand flats east of the Pärnu River mouth significantly. Summer southwesterlies are the more common setup driver during the main beach season; autumn and winter storms from the southwest or west occasionally push water levels 60 to 100 centimetres above mean along the Pärnu waterfront. Pärnu is Estonia's main beach resort destination, built on a long arc of fine sand along the eastern shore of the Gulf of Riga. The beach faces roughly west-southwest, sheltered from the direct fetch of open Baltic swell by Saaremaa and Hiiumaa, and the wave climate is consequently gentle for most of the summer — ideal for families, stand-up paddleboarders and open-water swimmers. The water temperature reaches 18 to 22 degrees Celsius in July and August, the main swim season. Sea anglers and kayakers on the Pärnu River and the coastal shallows plan around wind, temperature and the migratory patterns of vimba, sea trout and pike-perch. The Estonian Weather Service Pärnu forecast and the EMHI (Estonian Environment Agency) coastal monitoring provide operative sea-level guidance. TideTurtle predictions for Pärnu come from Open-Meteo Marine; at this tidal range they are context, not precision.
