Bornholm
Bornholm is a Danish island of 588 km² in the southern Baltic Sea, closer to Sweden, Poland, and Germany than to Copenhagen. The Baltic is essentially non-tidal: the Moon's pull raises water by just 0.0–0.1 m at Rønne. What matters here is wind setup — sustained westerlies can raise the east Baltic coast by 0.5 m while lowering Bornholm's western shore, and easterlies do the reverse. Rønne on the west coast is the main port, with ferry connections to Copenhagen and Ystad. Gudhjem on the northeast has a small harbour ringed by coloured fishing cottages and a famous herring smokehouse. Nexø on the east gives access to Dueodde's white sand dunes at the island's southern tip. Hammershus on the northwest cliffs is the largest medieval castle ruin in Scandinavia. Cyclists, anglers, amber collectors, and food tourists drawn by the røgeri smoked-herring culture all share this granite-and-sandstone coast.
