St. Michael

St. Michael is the central parish of Barbados, containing Bridgetown, the capital and largest city on the island. Bridgetown's historic district and Garrison area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011 — the Caribbean's first capital city to receive this designation — recognising the intact Scottish merchant streetscape, the Georgian parliament buildings (in continuous use since 1639), and the Garrison Savannah military complex. The Careenage, an inner tidal harbour inlet that was the original working centre of the port, now fronts the tourist and restaurant district. Carlisle Bay, immediately south of the Careenage, is a horseshoe bay protected from Atlantic swell by the island's eastern orientation — the bay faces southwest into the calm Caribbean. The Carlisle Bay Marine Park contains six accessible shipwrecks at 6 to 37 metres depth, including the Greek freighter Stavronikita, and supports regular sightings of hawksbill and leatherhead sea turtles. Year-round water temperatures of 26 to 29°C make Barbados reliably warm. Tidal range is 0.3 to 0.7 metres — Caribbean semi-diurnal with limited range.
