Southern Taiwan
Southern Taiwan's coast faces three different seas — the Taiwan Strait closes off to the northwest, the Luzon Strait opens to the Philippine Sea in the east, and the South China Sea lies to the southwest — but the tidal character throughout is broadly similar: mixed semidiurnal, with mean ranges in the 1.0 to 1.2 m band. Spring tides at new and full moons push toward 1.5 m; neaps ease toward 0.5 m. The smaller range compared to the north reflects the South China Sea's more enclosed geometry and the way Taiwan's southern headland sits at the junction of multiple tidal systems rather than in the direct path of any one of them. Kaohsiung is Taiwan's largest port and the economic engine of the south. The city's harbour — one of the busiest container ports in Asia — is entered through a narrow channel at Qijin Peninsula, where tidal currents are felt on every passage. The Love River (Ai He) runs through the city centre to the inner harbour basin; at low tide, the river's bed is partially exposed and the distinctive Kaohsiung skyline reflects in a strip of tidal water. Donggang, a traditional fishing town roughly 25 km southwest of Kaohsiung, is best known for the Pacific bluefin tuna (Hon-maguro) spring auction season — local boats from the offshore fishing ground bring in bluefin from April through June, and the pre-dawn dockside auction draws buyers from across Asia. The inshore tide state affects the harbour entry timing for returning trawlers. Kenting National Park occupies the southernmost tip of Taiwan — the island's first national park and its most diverse marine environment. Fringing coral reefs extend along the Hengchun Peninsula coast; visibility in the clear South China Sea water is routinely 15 to 20 m on calm days. The park covers both the Pacific and South China Sea coasts of the peninsula, with slightly different swell exposure and tidal timing on each side. The Central Weather Administration (CWA) is the authoritative source for tidal predictions around Taiwan; Open-Meteo Marine supplements with gridded model data accurate to approximately ±45 minutes on timing and ±0.2–0.3 m on height. Verify with CWA before any passage, dive, or coastal activity where tidal state is safety-critical.
