About tides at Anse Lazio

Anse Lazio sits at the northwestern tip of Praslin, tucked between two granite headlands that descend directly into the Indian Ocean. The beach is 300 m long, curved in a shallow arc, white sand over a mixed granite-and-sand bottom, facing approximately 320° northwest into the open ocean. The headlands on both flanks — rounded and orange-pink in warm light, smoothed by centuries of salt weathering — frame the beach and block the lateral swell approach that would otherwise disturb the water. The result is consistently cleaner conditions than most SE-facing beaches on Praslin's more exposed coast. The tidal regime at Anse Lazio is mixed predominantly diurnal, identical to the rest of the inner Seychelles. Spring range: 0.9–1.3 m above chart datum. Neap range: 0.3–0.5 m. The beach depth at the water's edge changes by 0.6–1.0 m between low and high spring water — noticeable but not dramatic. At low spring water, the lower beach sand step is exposed and the water in the swimming zone is knee-to-waist depth for 10–15 m from the shore. At high spring water the waves reach closer to the uppermost sand and the visible beach width narrows from approximately 30 m to 15 m at the widest point. Anse Lazio faces northwest, which makes it the exposed side during the NW monsoon from December through March. During active northwesterly weather, swell of 0.5–1.2 m arrives directly into the bay; the water loses the turquoise clarity it holds in calm conditions and the swim zone becomes less comfortable. The SE trade season (May–October) is the primary attraction season: the northwest-facing orientation puts the beach in the island's partial wind shadow, and the morning water — before the diurnal sea breeze arrives at 10:30–11:00 — is often glassy. Snorkelling at Anse Lazio is most productive around the granite boulders of the two headlands, particularly the northeast headland where a sand-and-granite reef extension runs 50–80 m offshore into 2–4 m of water at mean level. Fish species regularly observed include parrotfish, surgeonfish, moorish idol, hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), and various wrasse. The hawksbill turtle is protected under Seychelles law; a respectful distance of at least 3 m is required when one is encountered. The best visibility window is at or near high water when tidal movement is minimal and any bottom sediment has settled. Photographers rank Anse Lazio among the most photographed beaches in the Indian Ocean. The elements are well-known: the orange-pink granite boulders of the northeast headland, the turquoise water over the sand-and-granite bottom, and the white beach arc with tree cover behind. The optimal light for headland photography is the two hours after sunrise from a position in the northeast corner of the beach, looking southwest across the bay. At low water the granite ledge at the base of the northeast headland is partially exposed; the textural contrast between the wetted rock and the dry upper surface changes through the tidal cycle. Access to Anse Lazio from Praslin's ferry landing at Baie Sainte Anne takes 25–35 minutes by shared taxi or 40–50 minutes by infrequent bus. There is a small restaurant at the north end of the beach (Bonbon Plume / Chez Christo) serving grilled fish and coconut-based dishes. No beach vendor infrastructure beyond the restaurant; arrive with water and sun protection. The car park at the top of the access path fills by 10:00 on calm-weather days during peak season (July–August, December–January). Predictions for Anse Lazio on this page come from Open-Meteo Marine, a gridded global ocean model; accuracy is typically ±45 minutes on timing and ±0.2–0.3 m on height. The Seychelles Meteorological Authority (SMA) tide tables for Victoria Harbour are the authoritative reference for the Praslin area, with a time offset of less than 10 minutes relative to the Victoria gauge.

Tide questions about Anse Lazio

What is the best time of day to visit Anse Lazio for photography?

For the classic Anse Lazio shot — granite boulders of the northeast headland in the foreground, turquoise water and white sand arc behind — the optimal window is the first two hours after sunrise when the light hits the northeast headland from a low angle, revealing the orange and pink tones in the granite. The beach faces northwest, so afternoon light illuminates the southwest headland more favourably. At low water, the base of the northeast headland ledge is partially exposed, adding textural foreground. Arrive before 08:00 to beat the tour groups and the midday shade from the trees above the beach; by 11:00 the car park and beach are busy on peak-season days (July–August).

Can you snorkel at Anse Lazio?

Yes. The most productive snorkelling is around the granite boulders and the sand-and-granite reef extension at the northeast headland, which runs 50–80 m offshore into 2–4 m of water at mean water level. Common sightings include parrotfish, surgeonfish, moorish idol, wrasse, and hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata, protected under Seychelles law). The best visibility window is at or shortly after high water — spring range 0.9–1.3 m — when tidal movement has slowed and bottom sediment has settled. At low neap tide the shallowest boulder sections can be less than 0.5 m deep and difficult to cross without damage. Equipment can be hired from operators in Anse Volbert and Grand Anse on Praslin; there is no rental at Anse Lazio itself.

How do I get to Anse Lazio from the Praslin ferry?

The inter-island ferry from Victoria (Mahé) arrives at Baie Sainte Anne on the south coast of Praslin. Anse Lazio is at the northwestern tip of the island — 25–35 minutes by shared taxi (SCR 80–120 per person) or 40–50 minutes on the infrequent island bus (check the bus timetable at the ferry terminal). The bus runs two to four times daily on the north coast route and does not always schedule for ferry connections. Shared taxis wait at the ferry landing and are the most reliable option. There is a small car park at the top of the track descending to the beach; the beach itself is reached on foot down a 200 m rocky path.

What is the tidal range at Anse Lazio, and does it affect the beach?

Spring range at Anse Lazio is 0.9–1.3 m above chart datum; neap range is 0.3–0.5 m. The beach arc narrows from approximately 30 m width to 15 m width between low and high spring water as the water line advances toward the tree line. At low water the lower beach step firms up and the turquoise lagoon is shallow enough to wade across the entire bay. At high spring water the depth in the centre of the bay is roughly 1.5–2.0 m at the beach edge. The mixed diurnal regime means the beach sometimes has only one high and one low per day — if the plan is to photograph the low-water foreground, check whether the day's tidal pattern produces a low water in the morning (pre-10:00) or afternoon.

Is there food or water available at Anse Lazio?

Yes, but limited. A small restaurant at the north end of the beach — operating under the Bonbon Plume / Chez Christo name — serves grilled fish, curries, and cold drinks. It is open daily during tourist season (approximately 09:00–17:00). Prices are significantly higher than restaurants in Anse Volbert, reflecting the isolated location. There is no beach vendor, no kiosk, and no water tap outside the restaurant. Carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person for a half-day visit; the sun exposure on the northwest-facing beach with granite reflectance is intense, and shade from the casuarinas and takamaka trees is available only at the back of the beach.
