About tides at Kotka

Kotka is a maritime industrial city on an island in the eastern Gulf of Finland, at the mouth of the Kymi River (Kymijoki) system, 130 km east of Helsinki. The city was established in 1878 on islands at the river delta; the Kymi flows through and around the city before reaching the Gulf of Finland through several distributary channels. The position at a major river mouth gave Kotka its economic identity — sawmills processing lumber from the interior, paper and pulp mills using the river current and later the power grid, and a harbour that exported Finnish forest products to Europe. The Langinkoski Imperial Fishing Lodge, 5 km north of the city centre on the Kymi River rapids, is one of Finland's more unusual historical sites: a modest wooden lodge built in 1889 for Tsar Alexander III, who was an enthusiastic salmon angler and had the lodge constructed specifically to fish the Kymi's salmon run. The Tsar fished here on several summer visits; the lodge (now a museum) is preserved largely as it was in the 1890s, in a forest setting on the riverbank above the rapids. The salmon run in the Kymi — Atlantic salmon ascending from the Gulf of Finland — still occurs, reduced from its historical levels but present, and recreational fishing in the rapids is permitted under licence. The Maretarium in the city harbour area is a freshwater and brackish-water aquarium housed in a lighthouse island, focusing on Finnish native fish species — pike, perch, zander, salmon, sea trout, and the Baltic species specific to the Gulf of Finland's brackish regime. The Finnish Maritime Museum, partly housed in vessels moored in the harbour, covers the history of Finnish seaborne trade and navy. The Kotka Maritime Festival (Meripäivät) is held in late July and claims to be the world's largest free maritime event — a figure that is contested but conveys the scale: over 200,000 visitors over the festival weekend, with historic vessels, maritime craft demonstrations, concerts, and a major maritime film programme. The Gulf of Finland at Kotka is microtidal: mean astronomical range 0.1 to 0.2 m. The Kymi river discharge is the dominant local influence on nearshore salinity and current at the city's harbour approaches; spring snowmelt periods (April to May) bring the highest freshwater discharge. Wind-driven sea-level changes and the seasonal Baltic water-level cycle dominate over astronomical tide throughout the year. Predictions on this page come from Open-Meteo Marine gridded model. The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) operates a sea-level gauge at Kotka and publishes the authoritative sea-level data for the eastern Gulf of Finland.

Tide questions about Kotka

When is the next high tide at Kotka?

The hero block at the top of this page shows the next predicted high at Kotka in local Eastern European Time (EET/EEST, UTC+2/UTC+3). Astronomical range in the eastern Gulf of Finland at Kotka is 0.1 to 0.2 m — negligible as a practical influence on harbour or beach conditions. Wind-driven level changes and the Kymi River discharge are the dominant local influences on nearshore water levels. The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) operates a sea-level gauge at Kotka and publishes the authoritative data.

What is the tidal range at Kotka?

Mean astronomical range is 0.1 to 0.2 m in the eastern Gulf of Finland. The Gulf is narrow and shallow, and the tidal signal diminishes toward the east. The Kymi River spring discharge (April to May) can raise the nearshore water level and significantly reduce salinity in the harbour approaches. Wind-driven setup from westerly storms raises the sea level; easterlies drain it. Seasonal variation of 20 to 30 cm is a larger signal than the astronomical tide here.

Where do these tide predictions come from?

Open-Meteo Marine, a free gridded global ocean model. At Kotka's 0.1 to 0.2 m astronomical range, the model's typical accuracy (plus or minus 45 minutes, 0.2 to 0.3 m) equals or exceeds the total signal. The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) operates a sea-level gauge at Kotka and provides the authoritative sea-level and storm-surge data for the eastern Gulf of Finland.

Can I fish for salmon at Langinkoski?

Salmon and sea trout fishing in the Kymi River rapids at Langinkoski is permitted under a recreational fishing licence, available from the Finnish Fishing Licence system (Kalastuskortti). The rapids at Langinkoski are among the better accessible salmon fishing locations in southern Finland; the fish ascend from the Gulf of Finland on the spring and summer run. The Langinkoski Imperial Lodge museum is open from May through August; a guided tour of the lodge takes about 45 minutes. The fishing platform and riverside walks around the lodge are accessible year-round. River flows peak in May; the most productive salmon window is typically June through early August.

Is this safe to use for navigation?

No. TideTurtle is a planning tool for recreational coastal activity, not a navigation resource. The Kotka harbour approaches and the Kymi River distributary channels require chart navigation — the outer archipelago has numerous rock hazards. The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency publishes electronic charts for Finnish coastal waters. The Kymi spring discharge affects nearshore depths and channel buoy positions; current notices should be checked during high-discharge periods. Open-Meteo Marine gridded predictions do not replace authoritative navigation sources.
