About tides at Jolly Harbour

A short guide to the coastline at Jolly Harbour — geography, sea state, and what the tide is actually doing under your feet.

Jolly Harbour is a purpose-built marina resort on the southwest coast of Antigua, occupying a sheltered bay behind a barrier sandbar 15 km south of St. John's. The development — marina basin, residential villas, a small commercial village, and a beach on the outer side of the sandbar — was constructed in the 1980s on what was previously open salt pond and mangrove, creating one of the more self-contained small-marina environments in the eastern Caribbean. The marina holds approximately 150 berths, with full-service boatyard, fuel dock, and the chandlery and provisioning infrastructure that cruising yachts require.

The tidal regime at Jolly Harbour follows Antigua's island-wide microtidal pattern: mixed semidiurnal, spring range 0.3 m. The sandbar entrance to the marina basin has a controlling depth that requires attention from vessels with draft above 1.8 m, particularly on lower low-water events. The channel markers at the entrance are buoyed; the practical draft limit on a mean low-water event is approximately 2.0–2.1 m, and on the lower lows of the diurnal inequality cycle this drops to 1.8–1.9 m. Vessels with draft 1.7 m or less have no tide constraint. The marina basin itself maintains dredged depth independent of tidal state once inside.

For beach families, Jolly Harbour Beach on the outer (Caribbean-facing) side of the sandbar is one of Antigua's most reliably calm beaches. The bay faces southwest, protected from the dominant northeast trade wind by the island's bulk. At low tide the beach widens by approximately 8–10 m across its sandy shelf, exposing firm sand that extends 30–40 m from the waterline. The swim zone is clear sand bottom in 0.5–1.5 m at low tide, with deeper water beyond the shelf. The beach bar and restaurant at the beach club operate year-round; the water sports rental operation runs kayaks, paddleboards, and small sailing dinghies from the beach.

Kayakers using Jolly Harbour as a base have two route options. North along the coast toward St. John's, the shoreline has sandy beaches and small headlands for approximately 8 km before the character changes near the capital. South toward Cades Bay and Morris Bay, the coast is more remote, with a reef structure running parallel to shore that provides calm inside-reef paddling and snorkel stops. The south coast reef at Cades Reef is one of Antigua's most extensive barrier reef systems, running for 3 km offshore from Cades Bay — accessible by kayak in calm conditions or by snorkel boat from the marina.

The marina's sport fishing operation runs offshore trips targeting blue marlin, wahoo, and dorado (mahi-mahi) in the Atlantic waters south and west of Antigua. The Antigua banks, 30 km southwest, are a productive fishing ground; most charter boats are on the bank within 45 minutes of departure from Jolly Harbour. The fleet monitors VHF 68 and VHF 16. Shore fishing from the marina entrance jetty catches small jacks, snappers, and occasional barracuda on the current through the entrance channel.

The Jolly Beach Hotel on the north end of the beach and the villas within the marina development provide accommodation at a price point between the large all-inclusive resorts further north on the island and the English Harbour boutique hotels on the south coast. The marina village has a grocery store, a pharmacy, and several restaurants that serve both marina residents and beach visitors from outside the development.

For photographers, the morning view from the beach looking northeast along the coast, with the trade-wind sky building behind the island's interior hills, gives the wide beach foreground and the Caribbean colour that the island is marketed on. The marina basin at dusk, with mast lights reflected in the still water, is the alternative composition available within the same site.

All tide predictions for Jolly Harbour come from the Open-Meteo Marine gridded model. Timing accuracy is ±45 minutes; height accuracy is ±0.3 m above Chart Datum.

Common questions

Tide questions about Jolly Harbour

Quick answers to the most common questions about tide times, range, and water access at Jolly Harbour.

What is the controlling depth at the Jolly Harbour entrance channel?

The sandbar entrance channel at Jolly Harbour has a controlling depth of approximately 2.0–2.1 m on mean low water. During the lower low-water events of the diurnal inequality cycle (which can reduce depth by 0.1–0.2 m below the mean), the minimum usable depth is 1.8–1.9 m. Vessels with draft up to 1.7 m have no tide constraint. Deeper-draft vessels should enter on the flood, ideally within two hours of high water, adding the 0.3 m spring increment. The channel is marked with buoys; the marina monitors VHF 16 and can advise on current conditions.

Is Jolly Harbour beach suitable for families with children?

Jolly Harbour Beach is one of Antigua's most reliably calm swimming beaches — the southwest-facing exposure gives natural protection from the northeast trade wind. The shallow sand shelf at low tide is 30–40 m wide in 0.5–1.0 m depth, making it a practical paddling and wading area for children. At high tide the water deepens over the shelf to 1.0–1.5 m, still manageable but requiring more supervision for younger children. No significant shore break occurs on normal-weather days. Beach chair rentals, a bar, and a restaurant are on the beach; water sports rentals operate daily.

What is Cades Reef, and can I reach it from Jolly Harbour?

Cades Reef is a 3 km barrier reef running offshore from Cades Bay, 5 km south of Jolly Harbour. It is one of Antigua's most extensive reef systems, protected as a marine reserve. Snorkel boats and dive trips from Jolly Harbour marina access the reef directly — the transit is 15–20 minutes. In calm conditions, experienced open-water kayakers can paddle to the reef's inner edge from the beach. The outer reef wall drops to 15–25 m and is rated among the best recreational dive sites on Antigua's southwest coast. Visibility on calm days exceeds 20 m.

What sport fishing operates from Jolly Harbour?

Sport fishing charters depart Jolly Harbour marina for the Antigua banks southwest of the island — a 30–45 minute run to productive grounds for blue marlin, wahoo, and mahi-mahi. The season peaks December through April when migratory pelagics are moving through the eastern Caribbean. Half-day bottom fishing trips target grouper and snapper on the nearby reef structure. Charter boats are bookable through the marina office or directly via VHF 68. Shore fishing from the entrance jetty catches jack and snapper on the tidal current through the channel, peaking on the ebb.

Is Jolly Harbour suitable as a base for exploring the rest of Antigua?

Jolly Harbour sits on the southwest coast, centrally positioned for reaching most of the island within 30 minutes by car. English Harbour and Nelson's Dockyard are 20 minutes south; St. John's capital is 20 minutes north. Antigua's 365 beaches are spread around the coast; the north coast (Dickenson Bay, Half Moon Bay) requires a 40-minute drive. Rental cars are available from the marina area. The south coast beaches closest to Jolly Harbour — Morris Bay, Cades Bay — are within a 10-minute drive and considerably less crowded than the beaches served from St. John's.
