About tides at Tavira, Algarve

Tavira sits on the eastern Algarve, on the inner side of the Ria Formosa lagoon system that runs along the central southern coast of Portugal. The town is separated from the open Atlantic by a barrier island, Ilha de Tavira, with a narrow inlet — Barra de Tavira — at one end and a wider one further west at Barra de Cabanas. The tide signature is cleanly semidiurnal, two highs and two lows of comparable size, twelve and a half hours apart. Mean range at the inlets is about 2.0 metres, climbing past 3 metres on spring tides and dropping near 1.0 on neaps. The narrow inlets concentrate the flow and the current at each runs sharper than the height swing implies. The lagoon itself transforms across the cycle: salt pans and tidal flats around Tavira drain on the ebb and the channels behind the barrier island become a maze of tidal creeks. The flamingo flocks that overwinter on the Ria Formosa work these flats at the lower half of every cycle. Photographers on the Praça da República walk over to the Ilha de Tavira beach by ferry across the inlet — the ferry runs to a tide-aware schedule, slack water being the smoothest crossing. Predictions on this page come from Open-Meteo's gridded marine model. Instituto Hidrográfico is the authoritative Portuguese tide source.

Tide questions about Tavira, Algarve

When is the next high tide at Tavira?
The hero block shows the next high tide at the Barra de Tavira inlet in local Western European time. The 7-day table covers all four daily extremes. The lagoon-side town gauge readings lag the open inlet by 30–60 minutes depending on the state of the tide and which channel route the flow takes.
What's the typical tide range at Tavira?
Mean range at the Tavira inlet is about 2.0 metres, with spring tides pushing past 3 metres and neaps near 1.0. The eastern Algarve runs the same broad signal as Faro further west on the Ria Formosa, with phase differences of a few minutes between the inlets.
Where do these tide predictions come from?
Open-Meteo's marine model produces the gridded predictions on this page — useful for daily planning but not navigation-grade. Instituto Hidrográfico is the authoritative Portuguese tide source. IH publishes harmonic tide tables for the Algarve coast and runs the gauge network behind them.
When are the salt-pan flats best for flamingo watching?
The widest exposed flats on the Tavira side of the Ria Formosa open up at the lower half of every cycle, with the lowest spring lows around new and full moons producing the broadest exposures. The 7-day table flags each day's lowest predicted tide. Sunrise from the sun/moon block helps for the calmest water and softest light on the flats.
Is this safe to use for navigation?
No. For piloting in or out of the Tavira inlet, the Cabanas inlet, or the inner channels of the Ria Formosa use IH's authoritative tide tables, the latest Avisos aos Navegantes, and the Polícia Marítima's local guidance. The inlets shoal and shift with each storm; channel buoyage gets repositioned frequently.
