Kent

Kent occupies the south-east corner of England, where the Thames Estuary meets the southern North Sea and the English Channel funnels in from the west. Sheerness on the Isle of Sheppey sees about 5 metres mean range, climbing past 6 on spring tides. The estuary geometry amplifies the swing further as it pushes inland: Tilbury and Tower Pier in central London see comparable ranges, with phase delays of an hour or more behind Sheerness. The estuary at low water is a different place — the mudflats off Minster and the saltmarsh behind the Medway open up, and the Swale becomes a network of tidal creeks rather than a single waterway. Sheerness data on this site comes from a UK Environment Agency Flood gauge — that is real-time observation, not prediction, so storm surge during easterly gales shows up directly in the readings. The Thames Barrier west of London exists specifically because of this combination of estuary geometry and surge.
